Budget in Taman Negara
Part of the Taman Negara travel guide — see every topic in All Taman Negara Guides.
Taman Negara is inexpensive if you stay in Kuala Tahan village and eat at the floating restaurants, and considerably less so if you stay at the resort on the park side. The activities are individually cheap — a night walk, the canopy walkway, a rapids trip — but they are all guided and ticketed and there are several of them. A backpacker manages on RM 100–160 a day; a comfortable trip with the resort and a full activity list runs RM 350–700.
Accommodation and food
Village guesthouses and chalets at Kuala Tahan RM 40–180; the park hostel and campsite less; Mutiara resort on the park side RM 300–800. Food: the floating restaurants serve Malay dishes at RM 8–25, which is the cheap and good option; the resort restaurant is several times that. Small shops in the village sell basics. Alcohol is limited and expensive here — this is a small Malay village in Pahang rather than a resort strip.
Getting there
Bus from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut RM 25–40; minibus to Kuala Tembeling jetty a few ringgit; the longboat upstream RM 35–60 each way; or the road transfer from Jerantut RM 25–45. A packaged trip from Kuala Lumpur bundling transport, boat and accommodation runs RM 250–600 for two nights and is often the simplest way to do it. Park entry and camera permits are a few ringgit.
Activities
The canopy walkway is a small fee on top of park entry. A guided night walk is RM 35–60. Shooting the rapids is RM 40–80. A boat and visit to an Orang Asli settlement is RM 50–90. Lata Berkoh by boat is RM 100–250 per boat, shared. An overnight in a hide is cheap but must be booked. Guided multi-day treks and Gunung Tahan run into the hundreds or thousands depending on length and group size.
Where to save
Stay in the village rather than at the resort and eat at the floating restaurants — that single choice roughly halves a day's cost. Share boats, which are priced per vessel. Do the short trails and the canopy walkway independently rather than as part of a guided package, since they are marked and need no guide. And take the road transfer one way rather than the boat both ways if budget is tight, though the boat in is worth paying for once.
