Redang Beaches in Redang Island
Part of the Redang Island travel guide — see every topic in All Redang Island Guides.
Redang has some of the finest beaches in Malaysia, with fine white sand and clear blue water. The island is hilly and there are few roads, so each beach feels separate. Most beaches belong in practice to the resorts behind them, but the sand itself is open to all. Where you stay decides which beach you will use most, so it helps to know the differences before you book.
Pasir Panjang
Pasir Panjang, which means long beach, is the main beach on the east coast of Redang. It is the busiest part of the island, with many resorts in a row behind the sand. The beach is wide and white, the water is very clear, and there is coral close to the shore. Small shops, a few bars and restaurants sit between the resorts. In the evening there is music and some nightlife, but it is still calm. If you want to walk between resorts and have more choice of food, this is the best area to stay.
Pasir Kecil and the nearby bays
Just south of Pasir Panjang, past a rocky point, is Pasir Kecil, a smaller beach that is a little quieter. A few more resorts sit around the next bays. At low tide you can sometimes walk around the rocks between the beaches, but check the tide and wear sandals, because the rocks are sharp and slippery. These smaller bays are good if you want the clear water of Pasir Panjang but with fewer people. Some of these resorts have their own jetties and boat schedules.
Teluk Dalam
Teluk Dalam is a deep, sheltered bay on the north side of the island. The water is calm and the beach is long and soft, with forest hills behind it. Only a few large resorts share this bay, so it feels much quieter and more private than Pasir Panjang. It is a good choice for families and couples who want a peaceful stay. There are fewer places to eat outside your resort, so you will usually take a full-board package. Snorkelling is good near the rocks at the ends of the bay.
Teluk Kalong and the south
Teluk Kalong is a bay in the south of the island, with a beach and calm water. It is quieter, with only a few resorts. The coast in the south and west is rocky in many places, with small hidden coves that are easiest to reach by boat. Some snorkelling trips stop at these coves, where the water is calm and the coral is often in good shape. If you want to explore, ask your resort about a round-the-island boat tour on a calm day.
