Redang Island

Redang is a small, hilly island off the coast of Terengganu, on the east side of peninsular Malaysia. It is about 7 kilometres long and covered in green forest. The island and the small islands around it are part of a protected marine park, so the reefs are in good shape and fishing is not allowed. The water is very clear, and on a calm day you can see coral and fish from the beach. Redang is known for its soft white sand, especially at Pasir Panjang, the long beach on the east side. There is no real town, and almost every visitor stays at a resort on a package that includes the boat, meals and snorkelling trips. This makes the trip simple, but it is not a place for budget backpacking. The season is short. The northeast monsoon brings rough seas from about November to February, and most resorts and boats stop running. Come between March and October, and book early for school holidays and long weekends.
