Perfect 10 Day Itinerary in Sulawesi

Sulawesi does not work as a single overland trip — the island is too large and the roads too slow. What works is two blocks connected by a two-hour flight: the south, based on Makassar, for the Maros cave paintings and Tana Toraja's funeral culture; and the north, based on Manado, for the Lembeh Strait and Bunaken. Ten days covers both properly. Trying to add the Togeans or Wakatobi to that is a mistake; each needs its own week.
Days 1–2: Makassar and the karst
Arrive Makassar. Fort Rotterdam and the La Galigo Museum, Paotere harbour for the wooden schooners, and the Losari promenade at sunset with grilled banana from a cart. Day two, head north into the Maros-Pangkep karst: the Leang-Leang prehistoric park for hand stencils and a painted pig in a landscape of limestone towers, Bantimurung's waterfall and butterflies, and Rammang-Rammang, where a small boat takes you up a mangrove river between karst pinnacles to a village.
Days 3–6: Tana Toraja
Eight to nine hours north by road, or a short flight if the schedule allows. Base in Rantepao. Kete Kesu, Lemo, Londa and Bori for the tongkonan houses, cliff graves, hanging coffins and tau-tau effigies; the rotating market, including the buffalo section; and, if there is one on and you have a guide who can arrange it, a rambu solo funeral, which is the reason to be here. Walk or cycle between villages through the rice terraces on one of the days.
Days 7–10: the north
Back to Makassar and fly to Manado, about two hours. Base at the Lembeh Strait for two or three days of muck diving — mimic octopus, hairy frogfish, flamboyant cuttlefish on black sand — then move to Bunaken for wall diving, or split the stay. Add a dusk walk at Tangkoko reserve for spectral tarsiers emerging from a strangler fig and troops of crested black macaques, which is the best land wildlife experience in Sulawesi.
Variations
If you do not dive, replace the northern block with the Minahasa highlands, Tomohon's market and volcanoes, and Tangkoko, and give Toraja more days. If diving is the whole point, skip the south and spend ten days between Lembeh, Bunaken and Bangka. With two weeks, add the Togean Islands from Gorontalo, accepting the ferry schedule. And if Toraja is the point, four or five days there rather than three is genuinely better, because the villages reward slow walking.
