Best Time to Visit in Sulawesi

Sulawesi's size and shape mean it does not have one season. Broadly, the south including Makassar and Toraja is drier from around May to September and wetter from November to March. The north around Manado is wettest from about November to February and driest around August to October, with rain possible year-round. Temperatures are equatorial and consistent everywhere at sea level, and the highlands of Toraja and Minahasa are cool. The dive seasons and the funeral season are what most people actually plan around.

The south and Toraja

Drier from May to September, wetter from November to March. Toraja sits at seven hundred to a thousand metres and is cool and green year-round, with heavy rain in the wet months that makes the village roads difficult. Crucially, the funeral season clusters in the drier months, broadly from around June to September, after the rice harvest, when families have the resources and the guests can travel — so if attending a rambu solo is a reason for the trip, that is the window.

The north and the diving

Manado and the north peninsula are wettest from around November to February. Diving in Bunaken and the Lembeh Strait runs year-round — both are relatively sheltered — with the best conditions broadly March to November and the calmest, clearest water often around August to October. Lembeh's macro life is present all year and photographers go in every month. Rough seas in the wettest period can affect crossings to Bunaken more than the diving itself.

The remote islands

The Togean Islands, in the sheltered Gulf of Tomini, are relatively protected and divable most of the year, with the best conditions around April to October; ferry crossings are more reliable in the drier months. Wakatobi is generally best from March to November. In both cases the practical constraint is transport rather than weather: limited ferries and small aircraft are more likely to be disrupted in the wet months, and a cancelled boat in the Togeans can cost several days.

Choosing

For Toraja and a funeral: June to September. For diving in the north: March to November, with August to October the sweet spot. For a combined trip covering south and north: roughly July to September works for both. Avoid January and February for the north and December to March for the south if you have a fixed schedule. And note that Indonesian school holidays and Christmas and Easter matter in Toraja and Manado, which are Christian-majority, in a way they do not in Muslim-majority regions.
