Bunaken and North Sulawesi Diving in Sulawesi

Bunaken National Marine Park, established in 1991, covers around eight hundred square kilometres of water north of Manado and is one of Indonesia's oldest and best-known dive areas. The attraction is the wall diving: coral reefs that end abruptly at the edge of a submerged plateau and drop vertically for hundreds of metres, so you fly along a coral cliff with open blue on one side. It is the complete opposite of the Lembeh Strait an hour and a half away, and most people do both.
The walls
Sites around Bunaken, Manado Tua, Siladen and Montehage islands offer a consistent format: a shallow reef flat, a sharp drop-off at around five to fifteen metres, and then vertical or overhanging wall covered in hard and soft coral, sponges and enormous gorgonian fans, falling away into darkness. Green and hawksbill turtles are common and often large. Reef sharks, barracuda, jacks, napoleon wrasse and pyramid butterflyfish in numbers fill in. Visibility is generally twenty to thirty-five metres and often better.
The park
Bunaken has been protected since 1991 and operates a park entry fee system that funds patrols and management — a model that was influential in Indonesian marine conservation. Coral cover remains high on most sites, though the park has faced pressure from destructive fishing in the past and from visitor numbers now. Diving is generally straightforward: current runs along the walls and is used as a drift, but the sites are forgiving compared with Komodo or Alor, which makes Bunaken suitable for less experienced divers.
Beyond Bunaken
North Sulawesi has more than the marine park. Bangka island, north-east of Manado, has soft-coral pinnacles and fewer visitors. The Sangihe and Talaud islands stretch north towards the Philippines and see almost nobody. Inland, the Minahasa highlands hold Lake Tondano, the Tangkoko nature reserve with its tarsiers and black macaques, and the volcanoes Lokon and Mahawu. Manado itself is a Christian-majority city with a strong and famously spicy Minahasan food culture.
Practicalities
Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport has flights from Jakarta, Singapore and elsewhere in Indonesia. Bunaken is thirty to forty-five minutes by boat from Manado; accommodation ranges from simple homestays on Bunaken island to resorts on the mainland coast. A two-tank day is 1–1.8 million rupiah; the park fee is separate and annual. Diving is good year-round with the best conditions roughly March to November; December to February brings more rain and occasional rough crossings.
