Where to Stay in Lombok and the Gili Islands

Part of the Lombok and the Gili Islands travel guide — see every topic in All Lombok and the Gili Islands Guides.

Lombok's accommodation is markedly cheaper than Bali's for equivalent quality, and it clusters in four places: Kuta Lombok in the south, the three Gili Islands, Senggigi on the west coast, and Senaru in the north for the mountain. There is very little in between, and the island is large enough that the choice determines what you can reach. Splitting a week between the south coast and a Gili is the standard and correct pattern.

Kuta Lombok

The south-coast base and the fastest-changing part of the island. Hostels from 120,000–250,000 rupiah, guesthouses 250,000–600,000, boutique hotels and villas 800,000–4 million, and a growing number of larger resorts in the Mandalika zone next door. It is thirty minutes from the airport and within twenty of the best beaches and surf. Building is constant, so check recent reviews for construction noise. Prices rise steeply around MotoGP race weekends at the Mandalika circuit.

The Gili Islands

Trawangan has the widest range: dorms from 100,000 rupiah, guesthouses 250,000–600,000, and beachfront resorts to several million. Air is similar and quieter. Meno has fewer options and a couple of genuinely lovely small resorts. The constraints are universal: freshwater is scarce and often brackish, power is not always reliable, there is no hospital, and everything is carried in by boat, which is why prices are higher than the mainland. Book ahead in July and August.

Senggigi and the west

Senggigi was Lombok's original resort strip and has been overtaken by Kuta and the Gilis. What it retains is a good sunset, an easy position between the airport and the Gili boats, a strip of restaurants and bars, and cheap rooms — 200,000–700,000 rupiah for hotels that would cost double in Bali. It suits a night in transit rather than a stay. Further north, Sire has calm reef-protected water and a couple of upmarket resorts, and Malimbu has viewpoint hotels.

Practicalities

Book ahead for July, August, Idul Fitri and any MotoGP weekend. On the Gilis, ask specifically about freshwater and generator hours at the cheaper places. On the mainland, air conditioning matters and a scooter is essential unless you are in central Kuta. Note that Lombok is conservative outside the tourist areas, so villa neighbours and village guesthouses will appreciate discretion. And Senaru guesthouses are cool at altitude and mostly simple — they exist for the trek.
