Getting There and Around in Lombok and the Gili Islands

Lombok is reached by air into Praya in the south or by fast boat from Bali — and which you choose changes the trip, because the airport is next to the southern beaches while the boats land in the north-west near the Gilis. The island is around eighty kilometres across, the roads have improved enormously in the last decade, and there is no useful public transport for visitors. A scooter or a car with driver is effectively required on the main island; the Gilis have neither and need neither.

Flying

Lombok International Airport at Praya, in the south of the island, handles flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali and Kuala Lumpur, with the Denpasar hop taking about thirty minutes. It is thirty minutes from Kuta Lombok, an hour and a half from Senggigi and around two hours from Bangsal for the Gili boats. Fares from Denpasar are 400,000–1,200,000 rupiah. If your trip is about the south-coast beaches and surf, flying is clearly right; if it is about the Gilis, the boat is usually easier.

Fast boats from Bali

Fast boats run from Padang Bai, Serangan and Amed to the Gili Islands and to Bangsal on Lombok, taking ninety minutes to two and a half hours depending on the departure point and the sea. Fares are 400,000–800,000 rupiah return including hotel transfers. The crossing is over the Lombok Strait and can be genuinely rough — morning departures are calmer than afternoon ones. Safety standards vary between operators; check that life jackets are visible and accessible before boarding, and choose a larger vessel in poor weather.

Around Lombok

Scooters rent for 70,000–120,000 rupiah a day and are how most visitors move; the roads on the south coast and the west are now good, and traffic outside Mataram is light, which makes Lombok a more relaxed place to ride than Bali. The usual rules apply: an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement, without which your insurance will not pay. A car with driver is 600,000–900,000 rupiah for a full day. Ride-hailing apps work around Mataram and the airport and thinly elsewhere.

Getting to the Gilis

From Lombok, public boats leave Bangsal harbour for all three islands when full, taking twenty to thirty minutes for around 20,000–40,000 rupiah; private charters cost more and leave on demand. From Bali, direct fast boats run to Trawangan and Air. Between the islands, an island-hopping public boat runs a limited daily schedule and private boats fill the gaps. On the islands themselves there is no motorised transport at all — bicycles, walking and pony carts only.
