Best Time to Visit in Lombok and the Gili Islands

Part of the Lombok and the Gili Islands travel guide — see every topic in All Lombok and the Gili Islands Guides.

Lombok runs the same two-season pattern as Bali but is noticeably drier, particularly in the south, which is why the southern landscape is dry savanna and scrub rather than paddy. The dry season runs roughly April to October and the wet season November to March. Temperatures barely move — highs of 30–32°C and lows of 23–24°C. Two things depend directly on the season: the Rinjani trek, which closes for the rains, and the sea crossing to the Gilis, which is far rougher in the wet.

The dry season

April to October. Reliable sun, calm seas, offshore winds on the south coast for surfing, and the best water clarity for snorkelling and diving around the Gilis. This is also the Rinjani trekking window — the national park normally opens around April and the best conditions are June to September. July and August are the peak, with European and Australian holidays overlapping and Gili accommodation booking out. The south of the island is genuinely dry and brown in these months, which surprises people expecting Bali's green.

The wet season

November to March. Rain comes as heavy afternoon and evening downpours rather than continuous drizzle, and mornings are frequently clear. The island turns green, the waterfalls run at full volume, and prices drop by thirty to forty per cent. The costs are real: the Rinjani trek is normally closed from about January to March, the Lombok Strait crossing gets rough and boats are cancelled, sea visibility drops, and the exposed south-coast beaches take onshore wind and surf.

Ramadan and local events

Lombok is a conservative Muslim island and Ramadan changes the experience substantially: many warungs close during daylight, alcohol is harder to find outside the Gilis and tourist strips, and it is expected that visitors do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daylight hours. The Gilis are largely unaffected. Bau Nyale, the mass sea-worm gathering on the south coast, falls in February or March and is one of the island's biggest events. Idul Fitri fills flights and boats.

Choosing

For everything at once: May, June and September — dry-season conditions without peak crowds or prices. For Rinjani: June to September. For surf on the south coast: April to October. For the lowest prices and greenest landscape: the wet season, accepting a closed mountain and rougher crossings. Avoid the fortnight around Idul Fitri for travel logistics, and be aware that July and August on the Gilis is a different and much busier island than the rest of the year.
