Perfect 3 Day Itinerary in Bromo and Ijen

Part of the Bromo and Ijen travel guide — see every topic in All Bromo and Ijen Guides.

The standard East Java volcano run is three days, moves west to east, and finishes on the ferry to Bali — which is why it works so well as a link between Yogyakarta and Bali rather than as a standalone trip. The rhythm is unforgiving: one pre-dawn start at Bromo, a long transfer, another pre-dawn start at Ijen, and then a crossing. It is worth every minute and it is genuinely tiring, so build a recovery day into whatever comes next.

Day 1: arrive at the caldera

Travel from Surabaya, Malang or an overnight train from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo, then up to Cemoro Lawang on the Tengger caldera rim at around 2,200 metres. If you have the afternoon, walk out to the caldera edge behind the village or to Bukit Mentigen for the view over the Sea of Sand in evening light — it is free, walkable and far quieter than the dawn scrum. Eat early, buy a hat and gloves in the village, and sleep by eight, because the alarm is at two-thirty.

Day 2: Bromo, then east

Jeep at three for the viewpoint, sunrise over the caldera, then down across the Sea of Sand and up the 250 steps to Bromo's crater rim. Back by nine. Then a four-to-five-hour transfer east to Banyuwangi, ideally stopping at Madakaripura waterfall on the way — a canyon you walk into through falling water, and a good use of a transfer day. Arrive Banyuwangi in the afternoon, eat, and sleep by eight, because the next alarm is at midnight.

Day 3: Ijen, then Bali

Leave around midnight for the Paltuding trailhead. Climb three kilometres to the crater rim in the dark, then descend into the crater with a respirator to see the blue fire before it fades at first light. Back up for sunrise over the turquoise acid lake, then the walk down. Down the mountain by nine or ten. Cross to Bali on the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry — an hour — and then face the three-to-four-hour drive to Ubud or the south, which is the part everyone underestimates.

Variations

With a fourth day, add Tumpak Sewu waterfall from Malang, which is the most spectacular waterfall in Java and needs a morning. With five or six, add the Semeru trek to Ranu Kumbolo, or Malang and Batu properly. If you are not continuing to Bali, reverse the route and finish in Malang. And if you have only two days, do Bromo and skip Ijen — the blue fire is the better spectacle but Bromo is the better landscape and by far the easier morning.
