Where to Stay in Bromo and Ijen

Accommodation on the East Java volcano route is functional rather than good, and that is the right expectation. Cemoro Lawang, on the Bromo caldera rim, is cold, basic and unbeatably placed. Banyuwangi has ordinary town hotels. Malang and Surabaya, at each end, have the comfortable options. Almost everyone books a package that includes the beds, and the beds are chosen for position rather than quality — which, given you will be in them for six hours between very early alarms, is the correct trade.
Cemoro Lawang
The village on the caldera rim at around 2,200 metres, closest to everything and genuinely cold at night. Guesthouses run 200,000–600,000 rupiah and are simple: thin walls, limited hot water, blankets rather than heating. A handful of better hotels sit at 700,000–2 million. Staying here means you can walk to a viewpoint at dawn without a jeep, which is an underrated option. Book ahead in July and August. Bring warm clothes; the village shops sell hats and gloves for a reason.
The alternatives for Bromo
Probolinggo, at the bottom of the mountain road, has ordinary town hotels at 200,000–600,000 and is warm, but it adds an hour and a half to the pre-dawn drive. Malang, on the southern approach, is a genuinely pleasant city at 450 metres with good hotels at 300,000–1,200,000, and works well if you are combining Bromo with Tumpak Sewu and the south. Surabaya is the transport hub and is hot, large and not worth staying in unless you are flying.
Banyuwangi for Ijen
Banyuwangi town has a spread of hotels at 250,000–900,000 rupiah, an hour from the Paltuding trailhead, and is the standard base. Ketapang, by the ferry port, is convenient if you are crossing to Bali immediately after. There are a few guesthouses closer to the mountain at Licin. Some operators run Ijen directly from Bali overnight, which saves a hotel and costs you a night's sleep. Banyuwangi is also the base for the Alas Purwo and Baluran national parks, which almost nobody visits.
Practicalities
Book ahead for July, August and Indonesian school holidays. At altitude, ask specifically about hot water and blankets. Almost everything on this route is cash-only outside the larger town hotels. Package tours include accommodation and choose it for position, which is usually right. And consider one night of genuine comfort at either end — Malang before, or Bali after — because two consecutive nights of four hours' sleep at altitude is the actual cost of this itinerary.
