Best Time to Visit in Bromo and Ijen

Both Bromo and Ijen are dawn propositions in high, exposed places, which makes the season matter more than it does for most Indonesian destinations. The dry season, roughly April to October, gives clear mornings, visible summits and open trails. The wet season, November to March, means cloud at both craters most mornings, slippery paths, and a real chance of driving four hours to see nothing. Temperatures at altitude are low year-round and surprise people arriving from the coast.
The dry season
April to October. Clear dawns at Bromo with the classic view of three volcanoes above a mist-filled caldera, visible blue fire at Ijen, open trails on Semeru, and dry paths at the waterfalls. June to September is the core and is also the coldest — the Bromo viewpoints can drop below five degrees before dawn, and Semeru's camps get frost. July and August bring Indonesian school holidays and the largest crowds; Penanjakan on a peak weekend morning holds several hundred people.
The wet season
November to March, peaking January and February. Cloud sits in both craters most mornings, the blue fire is frequently invisible behind mist and rain, the Ijen descent becomes treacherous and is sometimes closed, and the Bromo viewpoints show grey. The waterfalls are at their most spectacular and their most dangerous, with flash-flood closures. Prices fall and the sites are quiet. It is not impossible — mornings often clear briefly — but it is a gamble, and a fixed one-day-per-volcano itinerary is a poor bet.
Volcanic closures
This is the variable that overrides the season. All three mountains are active and monitored, and access closes when alert levels rise: Bromo's crater rim has been closed repeatedly, Semeru's summit has been shut for extended periods after major eruptions including the deadly one in December 2021, and Ijen closes when gas concentrations or seismicity rise. Closures are announced at short notice. Check the volcanology agency's current status before booking anything non-refundable, and accept that a closure is not negotiable.
Choosing
For the best odds: May, June, September and early October — dry-season conditions without the July and August peak. For Semeru: the dry season only, and subject to the summit being open. For the waterfalls at full flow: the wet season, with care. Avoid January and February for any fixed plan. And note the moon for Ijen: the blue fire is brightest on a dark night, so a new moon improves it noticeably and a full moon washes it out.
