Takuapa Hospital is a good deal bigger than its district-hospital reputation suggests: a Ministry of Public Health general hospital of around 210 beds on Phetkasem Road just outside Takua Pa town, carrying the whole northern half of Phang Nga province. It is also the closest hospital to the Khao Lak beaches, roughly 24 km and twenty minutes up the highway, and it is where an ambulance called on 1669 from Bang Niang or Nang Thong will take you.
What it is known for
Being a real general hospital rather than the village clinic visitors expect. Founded in 1962, it is classed by the Ministry of Public Health as a general hospital rather than a community one, and the ministry’s 2024 count put it at about 209 beds — up from roughly 177 a decade earlier. Its catchment is four districts, Takua Pa, Kapong, Khura Buri and Thai Mueang, and the hospital’s own account adds patients who come across from Phanom in Surat Thani and Suk Samran in Ranong. It runs the emergency medical service centre for this coast, reached on 1669 around the clock. What it does not have is a recompression chamber; those are in Phuket.
Who it suits
Almost anyone who gets ill or hurt on the Khao Lak coast, and everyone without insurance. It is the nearest emergency room to the beaches by a wide margin, it handles road accidents, which on a highway full of rented scooters is most of the work, and it can stabilise anything before a transfer south. It is not the place to go for private-hospital comfort or for service in English: the wards are busy, the forms are in Thai and interpreting is informal. If you have insurance and the problem is not urgent, weigh the drive to Phuket instead.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, which on this coast means the cheapest care available anywhere near you. Foreigners pay more than Thai citizens and it is still a fraction of a private bill in Phuket. Payment is at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card; do not expect a Thai public hospital to bill a foreign insurer directly, so plan to pay and claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate on the way out — both are routine requests and both are what your insurer will want. Get a written estimate before any procedure.
Getting there
On Phetkasem Road, Highway 4, just north of Takua Pa town at Bang Nai Si, which is about 24 km and twenty minutes from Khuk Khak, Bang Niang and Nang Thong. There are no metered taxis on this coast; a hotel car, a resort minibus or a songthaew running north along the highway will all get you there, and Grab works patchily. In an emergency call 1669 rather than driving yourself — the hospital runs the ambulance service for this stretch. Tell a driver “rong phayaban Takua Pa”; it is on the main road with its own forecourt.
