Phang Nga Hospital is the provincial hospital: a Ministry of Public Health general hospital of around 215 beds in Tha Chang, on the edge of Phang Nga town. It is the hospital for the bay side of the province — the town itself, the limestone karst tours, the Ko Yao piers — rather than for the Khao Lak coast, which is nearer to Takua Pa and looks north instead.
What it is known for
Being the province’s hospital of record. It sits in Tha Chang on the edge of Phang Nga town, is classed by the Ministry of Public Health as a general hospital rather than a community one, and the ministry’s 2024 count put it at about 215 beds — almost exactly the size of Takuapa Hospital up the coast, which is why the province effectively has two main hospitals rather than one big one and a satellite. It covers the usual general departments and also runs a branch clinic in the municipality on a separate line. Like everything else in the province, it has no recompression chamber.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in or around Phang Nga town, anyone taken ill on the bay — the karst tours, Ko Panyi, the piers for Ko Yao Noi and Ko Yao Yai — and travellers coming down the inland road from Krabi or Surat Thani. It is not the obvious choice from Khao Lak: the drive is about 65 km and an hour over the hills, and Takuapa Hospital is nearer, the same size and better placed for the coast. Service is Thai-first, as at every public hospital here.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, a small fraction of what a private hospital in Phuket charges for the same treatment. Settle at the cashier in cash or by card; direct billing to a foreign insurer is not something to expect, so pay and claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave, and get a written estimate before any procedure. If you are insured and the case is serious, your insurer will usually want you moved to one of its contracted hospitals in Phuket and will arrange it.
Getting there
On Phetkasem Road, Highway 4, in Tha Chang on the northern edge of Phang Nga town, so any bus running the Phuket to Ranong road passes close by. From Khao Lak allow about 65 km and an hour; from Takua Pa about 70 km and rather more, because the road climbs and winds. Songthaews and motorbike taxis work inside the town; there are no metered taxis. Tell a driver “rong phayaban Phang Nga” — it is the only hospital in town and everyone knows it.
