For the most complex work the George Town hospitals are larger, and for a serious injury without insurance the state hospital is where an ambulance will go. Cost and insurance
Private pricing, in the same band as the other private hospitals here and far below the Western equivalent. Expect a deposit on admission unless your insurer has issued a guarantee letter first, and settlement before discharge; the group runs an international patient service that arranges exactly that, and the hospital appears on the national medical-travel council’s register of hospitals for foreign patients. Ambulance transport is chargeable, though the hospital says it is complimentary within ten kilometres for members of its neighbourhood schemes. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and take the itemised bill, the medical report and the discharge summary with you.
Getting there
At 82 Jalan Tengah in Bayan Baru, in the middle of the island’s southern town rather than out on the coast road: roughly fifteen minutes from Penang International Airport, ten from Queensbay Mall and twenty-five to forty from George Town depending on the hour. The Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway is the road in from the city and it clogs at the evening peak. There is no rail on the island, so it is a car or a Grab; the hospital has its own car park.
