Opened in 1999 and now licensed for 961 beds, Sunway Medical Centre in Bandar Sunway is the hospital for the western Klang Valley — Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and the university and resort district around it. It runs a 24-hour accident and emergency department and a separate children’s emergency, and holds Joint Commission International, ACHS International and Malaysian Society for Quality in Health accreditation.

What it is known for

Size and accreditation. Sunway Medical Centre is licensed for 961 beds, which makes it the largest private hospital in the Klang Valley and, by its own description, the largest private quaternary hospital in the country: cardiac surgery, oncology and nuclear medicine, neurosurgery, fertility and a full critical care complex. Its accident and emergency department runs 24 hours with a separate children’s emergency alongside it. It is accredited by the Joint Commission International, by ACHS International — which it took first in 2014 — and by the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health, an unusually complete set.

Who it suits

Anyone staying in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya or Bandar Sunway itself, where the theme park, the malls and the university campuses are, and for whom the hospitals in the city centre are half an hour of traffic away. It also suits an insured traveller anywhere in the Klang Valley who needs something complicated: the specialist depth here is as good as anything in the centre. For a minor complaint it is a long way to come unless you are already on this side of town.

Cost and insurance

Private pricing, comparable with the large private hospitals in the city and far below Western equivalents. The hospital states that its international patient centre works with a number of international insurers and third-party administrators so that treatment can be cashless, which is the arrangement to ask about before admission rather than after; without it, expect a deposit. Get the written estimate first. On discharge, ask for the itemised bill, the medical report and the discharge summary, and keep them together for the claim.

Getting there

In Bandar Sunway, off the Federal Highway southwest of the centre — twenty-five minutes from central Kuala Lumpur when the road is clear and appreciably more in the evening rush. It is the one hospital here besides Hospital Kuala Lumpur with real public transport: the elevated BRT station sits beside the hospital, and a covered walkway about a kilometre long runs to the neighbouring mall and resort complex. Note that the group runs other hospitals under the same name at Velocity in Kuala Lumpur and in Penang, so say Bandar Sunway to a driver.

Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 999 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
