One of the six national centres run for the health ministry, and the only one with a general hospital attached. It opened an International Health Care Center in 2015, holds JMIP accreditation for the treatment of foreign patients, and says the ministry has directed it to care for visitors from abroad. Behind that sits an ordinary large hospital: 706 beds, forty-three departments and a critical care centre.
What it is known for
Foreign patients. This is one of six national centres run for the health ministry and the only one with a general hospital attached, and it states that the ministry has specifically directed it to strengthen care for visitors from abroad. It set up an International Health Care Center in April 2015 to take the language and the paperwork out of the way, it holds JMIP accreditation for the treatment of foreign patients, and it runs a critical care centre alongside an infectious-diseases centre. Behind all of that is a large general hospital: 706 beds and forty-three departments, in Shinjuku.
Who it suits
A visitor who has fallen ill or been hurt and has nobody in Japan to arrange anything. The international department asks foreign patients without Japanese health insurance to make contact before coming, but its own page exempts injury and sudden illness from that requirement — which is precisely the traveller’s case. It is also the Tokyo hospital most likely to have someone who can take a medical history in English. It is not a quiet place, and the emergency centre triages by severity, so a minor complaint will wait behind a serious one.
Cost and insurance
A visitor is not covered by Japan’s national health insurance and pays the whole amount. Arriving at an outpatient clinic without a referral letter adds a selection fee of ¥11,000 where a doctor judges the consultation necessary, and ¥3,300 on a return visit. Coming outside clinic hours costs a further ¥11,000, first visit or not, unless you were referred or told to come by one of its own doctors — so an out-of-hours walk-in for something minor is the expensive way to use this hospital. Getting there
In Toyama, on the eastern edge of Shinjuku ward: five minutes on foot from the Kawada exit of Wakamatsu-kawada station on the Toei Oedo line, and about fifteen from exit 2 at Waseda on the Tokyo Metro Tozai line. Three Toei bus routes stop at the gate itself — the 宿74 from Shinjuku station, the 橋63 and the 飯62. First-visit reception is on the first floor of the central block, and the appointment lines are +81 3 3202 7494 and +81 3 3202 7495; the hospital asks first-time patients to book rather than arrive unannounced.
