Small, modern and unusually specialised for Cambodia. Sunrise Japan Hospital opened in 2016, built by a consortium of Japanese companies on a Japanese government development loan, and is run day to day by Japanese doctors and nurses working alongside Cambodian staff. Fifty beds, a 24-hour emergency department, and a real focus on stroke, head injury and neurosurgery — the cases where the first hour decides the outcome.
What it is known for
Neurosurgery and emergency care. The hospital was set up with Kitahara Medical Strategies International, a Japanese group whose speciality is stroke and neurosurgical medicine, and it shows in what the hospital offers: neurosurgery, neuroendovascular treatment, neurology and rehabilitation alongside general internal medicine, general surgery, cardiology, paediatrics, obstetrics and health checkups. Fifty beds is small and it is not the place for every specialty, but for a head injury off a motorbike or a suspected stroke it is the most capable choice in the city. Japanese staff work here permanently rather than visiting, and the hospital says roughly one patient in ten is a foreigner.
Who it suits
Anyone with a head injury, a suspected stroke or a serious road accident, and anyone who would rather be treated in a small, orderly hospital than a large one. It handles ordinary travel illness too — fevers, infections, stomach trouble, wounds that need closing — and its emergency department is open around the clock. It suits Japanese travellers particularly, since Japanese is spoken here as a matter of course rather than found on request. The trade-offs are its size and its position across the river, which matters more in traffic than the distance on the map suggests.
Cost and insurance
Priced as an international hospital, which in Cambodia means well above local rates and still below Bangkok. Payment is expected in United States dollars, and a deposit or an insurer’s guarantee is normal before an admission. The hospital has said that only a small fraction of its patients use insurance at all, so do not assume it will bill yours directly — ring your policy’s assistance line first and ask for the arrangement to be made in advance. Otherwise treat it as pay-and-claim: keep every receipt, and ask for the medical report in English before you are discharged rather than afterwards.
Getting there
In Chroy Changvar, on the far side of the Tonle Sap from the riverside, on the road locals call the Bay Road. Cross the Japanese Friendship Bridge and turn right — that is the whole instruction, and every tuk-tuk driver understands it. Reckon on about thirty minutes by car from Phnom Penh International Airport and ten to fifteen from the riverside outside rush hour, but the bridge is a bottleneck at the end of the working day, so allow for it.
