Phnom Penh
Cambodia’s capital sits at the meeting of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and is also its business centre. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda compound is the grandest sight in the city; the National Museum holds the best of the Khmer-era statuary; and the yellow art deco dome of Central Market is a good place to start a market morning. The city has a lively café scene, from third-wave coffee in BKK1 to quiet garden cafés, and a short ferry or drive north takes you to Koh Dach, the “silk island”, for village lanes, weaving looms and a river beach. The riverside promenade along Sisowath Quay is the evening gathering place, the Russian Market is the best food and souvenir hall in the city, and the hotel rooftop bars and the small bars of Street 308 are the after-dark scene. Two days is enough.
