Island Ferries in Sihanoukville and Koh Rong

Part of the Sihanoukville and Koh Rong travel guide — see every topic in All Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Guides.

Speed ferries are the main way to reach Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Several companies run boats from Sihanoukville every day. The trip is short, but the sea can be rough, especially in the wet season. This guide explains the operators, the times, the piers and what to do when the weather turns bad.

Operators and routes

Several companies run speed ferries to the islands. Well-known names include GTVC, Buva Sea and Island Speed Ferry Cambodia. Most boats go first to Koh Touch on Koh Rong. Many also stop at piers in Saracen Bay on Koh Rong Sanloem, and some go on to M'Pai Bay or to other beaches. Some boats link the two islands. Before you book, check that the boat stops at the beach where you are staying. If your resort is on a remote beach, it may run its own boat or arrange a small boat from the nearest pier.

Times and journey length

Ferries usually leave Sihanoukville several times a day, from the morning to the middle of the afternoon. Return boats leave the islands at similar times. A speed ferry takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to Koh Touch. With extra stops, the trip can take longer. There are no ferries at night. Timetables change with the season and the number of passengers, so check the current times with the company or your hotel. Take a morning boat if you can. You arrive with more daylight to find your room and explore the beach.

Piers and tickets

Ferries leave from the tourist piers in Sihanoukville. Each company uses its own pier, and some offer a free pickup from hotels in town. Check your ticket for the pier and the check-in time, and arrive at least 30 minutes early. You can buy tickets online, through hotels and travel agents, or at the company offices. Return tickets are often cheaper than two single tickets. On the islands, confirm your return boat a day before. Keep your passport and valuables in a dry bag, as you may get wet when you board or land.

Weather and rough seas

In the dry season, from about November to April, the sea is usually calm. In the wet season, from about May to October, strong winds and storms can make the crossing rough. Boats can be bumpy and wet, and some trips are cancelled at short notice. If you feel seasick easily, sit near the back of the boat and look at the horizon. Do not plan your ferry on the same day as an important flight. Leave a spare day between the islands and your flight home. Always wear a life jacket if the crew asks.
