Colonial District 1 Landmarks Walk in Ho Chi Minh City

French Saigon left behind a compact showpiece quarter, and almost all of it fits in one easy District 1 walk. Anchor it at the red-brick Notre-Dame Basilica (1880) and the Central Post Office opposite — an 1891 iron-vaulted hall that still sells stamps — then drift down Dong Khoi, the old rue Catinat, past the Opera House to the floodlit City Hall above Nguyen Hue. An hour or two of history in balance, then back to the rooftops.
The Loop
Start at the Basilica — its Marseille-brick exterior has spent years wrapped in restoration scaffolding, so check whether the interior has reopened — and cross to the post office to send a postcard from beneath the vaulted ironwork. Browse Book Street next door, then walk Dong Khoi past the 1880 Hotel Continental and the Opera House, finishing at the City Hall façade, which is prettiest after dark. Go early morning or late afternoon; midday heat flattens everyone.

A handful of easy extensions sit minutes away when the loop is done. Nguyen Hue walking street runs from City Hall down to the river — fountains, street performers, and the nine-storey Cafe Apartment block, an old residence stacked floor to ceiling with tiny cafes overlooking the promenade. Book Street beside the Post Office is a shaded lane of bookshops and coffee stalls, and a few blocks on the Bitexco or Landmark 81 skydeck trades colonial brick for a bird's-eye view of the whole quarter.
