Colonial District 1 Landmarks Walk in Ho Chi Minh City

French Saigon left behind a compact showpiece quarter, and almost all of it fits in one easy District 1 walk. Anchor it at the red-brick Notre-Dame Basilica (1880) and the Central Post Office opposite — an 1891 iron-vaulted hall that still sells stamps — then drift down Dong Khoi, the old rue Catinat, past the Opera House to the floodlit City Hall above Nguyen Hue. An hour or two of history in balance, then back to the rooftops.
The Loop
Start at the Basilica — its Marseille-brick exterior has spent years wrapped in restoration scaffolding, so check whether the interior has reopened — and cross to the post office to send a postcard from beneath the vaulted ironwork. Browse Book Street next door, then walk Dong Khoi past the 1880 Hotel Continental and the Opera House, finishing at the City Hall façade, which is prettiest after dark. Go early morning or late afternoon; midday heat flattens everyone.

Two heavyweight stops sit minutes away if you want to go deeper. The Reunification Palace is a perfectly preserved slice of 1960s modernism — the presidential palace whose gates a tank famously crashed on 30 April 1975, its war rooms and retro salons intact. The War Remnants Museum, a short walk further, is harrowing but regarded by many travellers as essential. Both charge modest admission; check current opening hours before building your afternoon around them.
