Halong Bay changes character with the calendar: autumn hands you blue skies and knife-sharp karst silhouettes, winter wraps the towers in silver mist, and summer brings hot green water and the occasional storm that shuts the whole bay down. There is no bad month so much as different bays — but if swimming, kayaking and sundeck weather matter most, timing the trip deserves real thought.
Season by Season
October to December is the sweet spot — dry, mild and clear, with the best visibility for photography. January to March turns cool and misty; the fog can be hauntingly beautiful, though it occasionally softens the views to watercolour. April and May are warm, calmer shoulder months. June through early September is hot, brilliantly green and busy with domestic holidaymakers — and it is typhoon season, when the port authority can suspend sailings at short notice.
Booking Around the Weather
The water is warmest for swimming from roughly May to September and brisk in midwinter. If you travel in storm season, build a buffer day into the Hanoi end of the itinerary and book operators with clear refund or reroute policies — cancellations are decided by the maritime authority, not the cruise line. Winter travellers should pack a real jacket for the sundeck; mist-season photographers should embrace it — the inky-brushstroke look is the classic Halong of scroll paintings.
