The signature Halong Bay experience is not a boat ride but a night afloat: overnight cruise boats anchor among the karsts after the day-trip fleet has gone home, and the bay at dusk — limestone towers fading into a silver sea — belongs to the people sleeping on it. Modern boats run from friendly wooden junks to boutique steel ships with balcony cabins, plunge pools and cocktail decks.
How a Cruise Day Runs
Most itineraries follow the same happy rhythm: board around midday at Tuan Chau marina or Halong's international cruise port, lunch while the boat threads into the karst maze, then an afternoon of kayaking, a cave or a swim stop. Sunset brings happy hour on the top deck, dinner is a long seafood affair, and there is usually squid-jigging off the stern before bed. Dawn tai chi, a final cave or lagoon, brunch, and you are back ashore by late morning.
Choosing Your Boat
One night gives you the postcard; two nights is the better trip, using the middle day for quieter corners a 24-hour loop can't reach. Check the route (Halong proper, Bai Tu Long to the north, or Lan Ha to the south), the cabin class, and whether kayaking is included rather than an add-on. Book ahead for October–April and summer weekends, and treat published prices as starting points — discounts are the norm.
