Ma Pi Leng Pass is the moment the Ha Giang Loop has been building toward: a ribbon of tarmac cut into a wall of rock between Dong Van and Meo Vac, with the improbably green Nho Que river threading the gorge far below. The road it rides — the Happiness Road — was carved largely by hand in the late 1950s and 1960s, and locals still speak of its builders with reverence.
Riding the Pass
The pass itself is short — the Dong Van to Meo Vac stretch is only around 20 km — so take it slowly. Pull-outs and cafes cluster near the summit viewpoint, and a narrow cliff-edge footpath, the so-called skywalk, lets walkers get even closer to the drop; leave the bike at the trailhead. Mornings are usually clearest and quietest — by mid-morning the day's convoys out of Dong Van arrive in waves.
The Happiness Road Story
The Ha Giang to Meo Vac highway was built in the late 1950s and 1960s by thousands of volunteer workers from more than a dozen ethnic groups, working largely with hand tools; the Ma Pi Leng section is remembered as the hardest, with teams suspended on ropes above the gorge for months to cut the ledge. A memorial near the summit tells the story — worth a stop to understand what this road cost.
