The Nho Que River Boat Ride on the Ha Giang Loop

Far below Ma Pi Leng, the Nho Que river runs an almost artificial jade green through Tu San canyon, whose sheer walls are often called the deepest gorge in Southeast Asia. Hydropower dams have stilled this stretch into a calm ribbon, and small tour boats now run through the narrows — a detour that turns the loop's most photographed view into somewhere you can actually float.
Getting Down to the Water
The jetty sits at the bottom of a brutally steep side road that leaves the main route near the pass on the Meo Vac side. Confident riders take their own bikes down the switchbacks; many prefer to park up top and ride down with the local shuttle drivers, which is money well spent in the wet. Buy tickets at the pier — boats leave as they fill, and the return cruise into Tu San runs roughly an hour.
On the Water
Mid-morning tends to give the best light, when the sun reaches the floor of the gorge and the green goes fluorescent; after heavy rain the river can turn silty and brown for a day or two, so flexible timing helps. Kayaks appear in the calm months for those who would rather paddle. Budget two to three hours door to door from the pass — it earns its place on even the tightest three-day plan.
