Sihanoukville & Koh Rong
Cambodia’s coast is a short stretch on the Gulf of Thailand, and most travellers skip the now-busy port of Sihanoukville itself in favour of a ferry out to Koh Rong or its quieter neighbour Koh Rong Sanloem — two islands of fine white sand, clear turquoise water, and bungalow accommodation that ranges from backpacker hammock to mid-range eco-resort. Long Set beach on Koh Rong is the iconic four-kilometre arc; Saracen Bay on Koh Rong Sanloem is the softer, calmer cove. The bioluminescent plankton on a moonless night — visible by paddling out from any beach — is a Cambodian highlight. Ferries leave from the Sihanoukville pier and take 45 to 60 minutes; book the morning boat to maximise daylight on arrival.
