Getting There and Best Time in Mui Ne

Part of the Mui Ne travel guide — see every topic in All Mui Ne Guides.

Mui Ne is about 200 to 220 kilometres east of Ho Chi Minh City. Since a new expressway opened, the trip by road is much faster than before. You can also take a sleeper or seat bus, or a train to Phan Thiet and a short taxi ride. This page explains the options and the best months to go.

By car and expressway

An expressway now runs most of the way from Ho Chi Minh City toward Phan Thiet. By private car or hired driver, the trip often takes about three to four hours, depending on traffic leaving the city. Weekend and holiday traffic can be slow, especially on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Many hotels can arrange a car with a driver. Ride-hailing apps also offer long trips, but confirm the price for the whole journey before you start. From Phan Thiet it is another 20 to 30 minutes along the coast to the main Mui Ne beach strip.

By bus

Many bus companies run between Ho Chi Minh City and Mui Ne every day. There are sleeper buses with flat seats and smaller limousine vans with large seats. Most leave from the backpacker area around Pham Ngu Lao street in the city centre or from bus stations, and many drop you directly at hotels along the Mui Ne beach road. The trip usually takes about four to five hours. Book a day ahead in busy seasons. Keep valuables in a small bag with you, not in the luggage hold. Buses also run to Mui Ne from Da Lat and Nha Trang.

By train

Trains run from Saigon station in Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet station. Wikivoyage lists a daily morning train that takes about five hours. Some long-distance north-south trains stop instead at Muong Man station, which is further inland from Phan Thiet. Times and stations can change, so check the current timetable with Vietnam Railways or a booking site. From the station, take a taxi or ride-hailing car to Mui Ne. The train is slower than the road but more relaxed, and you can watch the countryside go by.

Flights and the new airport

The nearest airport with regular passenger flights is Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City. From there you continue by car or bus. A new airport near Phan Thiet has been under construction for many years. Plans call for passenger flights there, but at the time of writing it was not yet open to passengers. Check the latest news before you plan to fly there. Many visitors fly into Ho Chi Minh City, spend a few days in the city, and then travel to Mui Ne by road.

Best time to go

The dry season, from about November or December to April, has the most sun and the least rain. Wikipedia says the peak season runs from December to April. This is also the windy season, which is great for kitesurfing but can make the sea rough for swimming. From about May to October it is the wet season, with short heavy showers, calmer wind and fewer tourists. Hotel prices are often lower then. Vietnamese holidays, especially Lunar New Year, are very busy, so book early if you travel at that time.
