Flower, Strawberry and Coffee Farms in Da Lat
Part of the Da Lat travel guide — see every topic in All Da Lat Guides.
Farming is the life of the Da Lat plateau. The cool climate lets farmers grow plants that do not like the tropical heat of the lowlands. Greenhouses cover the slopes and supply flowers, fruit and vegetables to cities all over Vietnam. Many farms now welcome visitors, so you can see how things grow and taste them fresh.
Flower farms and gardens
Da Lat is the flower capital of Vietnam. Roses, hydrangeas, lilies, chrysanthemums and the yellow golden everlasting flowers grow here in large numbers. Villages on the edge of the city, such as Van Thanh, have rows of greenhouses and small flower gardens you can walk around. In the centre, the Da Lat Flower Park by Xuan Huong lake has neat beds, topiary and glasshouses. Wild flowers also bloom on the hills. Pink cherry blossoms appear around January and February, and wild sunflowers turn the roadsides yellow in about November. Many gardens charge a small fee for photos.
Strawberry picking
Strawberries grow well in the cool air, and many farms let you pick your own. You walk between raised beds or hanging pots in a greenhouse, fill a basket and pay by weight. Farms near the city centre and on the roads to the north are easy to reach. Strawberries are found most of the year, with the best crop in the cooler, drier months. You will also see strawberry jam, strawberry wine and dried fruit in shops across the city. The Central Market sells other local fruit too, like persimmons, avocados and passion fruit.
Highland coffee farms
The hills around Da Lat grow arabica coffee, which likes height and cool weather. Most of Vietnam grows robusta in the warmer lowlands, so Da Lat arabica is special. Several farms south and west of the city offer tours. You see the coffee trees, learn how the cherries are picked and dried, and drink a cup at a terrace with views of the valley. Some farms also roast and sell their own beans. Picking season is usually from about October to December, when the red cherries are on the trees. Buy beans from the farm to take home.
Tea, vegetables and wine
Tea grows on hills outside Da Lat, especially on the road to Cau Dat, where green bushes cover the slopes in neat rows. It is a lovely place for photos in the early morning. The plateau is also a big grower of artichokes, cabbage and other temperate vegetables. Artichoke tea is a common local drink and a good gift. Da Lat also makes its own wine from local grapes and fruit, which you can find in shops around the market. A simple half-day loop by car or motorbike can take in a flower village, a strawberry farm and a coffee terrace.
