Penghu

Penghu is a group of about 90 low, flat islands in the strait west of Taiwan's main island, about 50 kilometres off the coast. The main town is Magong, with the airport, the harbour, hotels and seafood restaurants. Three large islands are joined by bridges, so you can drive across most of the main group in an hour. The rest you reach by boat. Penghu feels very different from the rest of Taiwan. There are no high mountains, only grass, stone walls and wide sea views. Old lava flows left cliffs of tall basalt columns, and fishermen built hundreds of stone weirs in the shallow water to catch fish at low tide. The most famous one, on Qimei, has the shape of two hearts. In summer the islands are hot and sunny, the beaches are busy and fireworks light up Magong harbour. In winter a strong wind blows almost every day, which brings windsurfers and kitesurfers from around the world.
