Kiltepan Sunrise in Sagada
Part of the Sagada travel guide — see every topic in All Sagada Guides.
Kiltepan is a hilltop viewpoint just outside Sagada town. On a good morning, the valleys below are filled with low clouds, and the sun rises over the mountains behind them. This view is often called the sea of clouds. It is one of the most famous sights in the Cordillera. This guide explains when you have the best chance to see it and how to plan your morning.
The sea of clouds
On cool, still mornings, clouds form in the valleys below Kiltepan and stay there until the sun warms the air. From the viewpoint, the mountain tops look like islands in a white sea. Rice terraces can also be seen on the slopes below once the light comes up. The clouds do not appear every day. Your chance is best in the cooler months and after a clear night. Even without clouds, the sunrise over the mountains is beautiful. Bring patience, as the clouds can change quickly.
Getting there
Kiltepan is a short drive from the town centre. Most visitors take a hired van or tricycle, which your guesthouse can arrange the night before. Some people walk, which takes longer and is done in the dark, so bring a torch. Plan to arrive well before sunrise, around 5 am or earlier, to get a good spot. In busy seasons the viewpoint can be crowded. Some visitors choose other viewpoints, such as Marlboro Hills, which need a longer walk but can be quieter.
When to go
The sea of clouds is most often seen in the cooler months, roughly from November to February, but it can also appear at other times. During the rainy season, from about June to October, mornings are often foggy or cloudy, and views may be poor. Weekends and holidays bring large crowds to the viewpoint. If you can, visit on a weekday and stay more than one night in Sagada, so you have more than one chance at a clear morning.
Tips for the morning
It is cold before sunrise, so wear a warm jacket, a hat and long trousers. Bring a torch or use your phone light on the way up. Stalls near the viewpoint may sell hot coffee and snacks, but bring water just in case. Please stay on the paths and do not walk on the terraces or private land. Take your rubbish back with you. After sunrise, go back to town for a warm breakfast before your next activity. Keep your voice low, as some visitors come for the quiet.
