Cave Connection in Sagada
Part of the Sagada travel guide — see every topic in All Sagada Guides.
The Cave Connection is a longer and harder route than the standard Sumaguing tour. It starts at Lumiang Cave and passes underground to come out through Sumaguing Cave. The route includes tight spaces, ropes, ladders and cold water. It is one of the most popular adventures in Sagada for fit visitors. This guide explains the route, the difficulty and how to prepare.
The route
The trip starts at the entrance of Lumiang Cave. Old wooden coffins are stacked near this entrance. They belong to the local community, so look quietly, do not touch them and ask your guide before taking photos. From there, you climb down into the cave and follow a long passage that connects to Sumaguing. On the way, you squeeze through narrow gaps, climb down using ropes, and wade through water. The trip usually takes about three to five hours. Your guide will explain the rules before you start.
How hard is it?
The Cave Connection is much harder than the standard Sumaguing tour. You need good fitness, a steady grip and no fear of tight, dark spaces. Some parts need you to lower yourself on a rope or step on your guide's knee or shoulder. Water can be deep in places, and you may need to swim a short distance. People who are not confident should do the standard Sumaguing tour first. Guides may refuse to take visitors who seem unprepared, and that is for your safety.
Booking and guides
Book the Cave Connection at the tourism office in town, the same way as other tours. Ask for this route by name. It is guided only, and guides usually take small groups, so a guide fee per group applies. The fee is higher than the standard tour because the route is longer. Start in the morning so you have plenty of time and light outside. Tell your guide about any health problems before you begin. In busy seasons, guides can be fully booked, so register early in the day.
Preparing well
Wear quick-dry clothes and sandals with good straps, or bare feet where the guide suggests. Leave valuables in your room. If you bring a phone or camera, use a strong waterproof case. Eat a good breakfast and drink water before you start. Bring a full change of clothes and a towel for afterwards. Expect to feel tired and cold at the end. A hot drink or a warm meal in town is a good way to finish the day. Rest well the night before.
