Crater Lake Trek in Mount Pinatubo
Part of the Mount Pinatubo travel guide — see every topic in All Mount Pinatubo Guides.
Mount Pinatubo is a volcano in central Luzon, north of Manila. In 1991 it had one of the largest eruptions of the 20th century. Since then, rain has filled its crater with a wide, blue-green lake. The classic trip is a 4x4 ride across grey ash fields, then a hike to the crater rim. Access depends on permits and conditions, and trips have sometimes been suspended. Check the current status before you go.
How the trip works
Most trips start in Capas, Tarlac province, from the Santa Juliana area. Visitors register at the local tourism office, then ride in an open 4x4 vehicle with a driver and a guide. The 4x4 crosses wide riverbeds and canyons made of volcanic ash. After the ride, you walk the last part on foot to the crater lake. The full trip takes most of a day. Most groups leave Manila very early, often around 2 or 3 am, so they can start the 4x4 ride at dawn.
The hike
The walking part of the trip follows a rocky and sandy trail up a valley to the crater rim. Its length has changed over the years, as roads and trails shift after heavy rain. For most fit people it is a moderate walk, but the sun and heat can make it tiring. There is little shade. Your guide will set the pace and tell you how long it should take. Wear good shoes with a strong grip, because the ground can be loose.
The crater lake
At the top, you look down on the crater lake, surrounded by steep, grey and green walls. The colour of the water changes with the weather and the light, from blue to green. There is a viewing area where groups rest, eat lunch and take photos. Swimming in the lake is not allowed, and boating rules can change, so follow your guide. Clouds can roll over the crater quickly. Stay with your group and follow your guide's timing for the walk back.
Check before you go
Pinatubo trips depend on permits, weather and local conditions. The Capas trail reopened in June 2025 after a long closure. Trips have been suspended at times, for example during heavy rain, after storms and for other local reasons. Rules, fees and routes can change with little notice. Before you plan your trip, contact the Capas or Tarlac tourism office, or a registered tour operator, and ask whether trips are running. Book only with registered operators. Have a backup plan in case your trip is cancelled on the day. Keep a free day in your plans if you can.
