Where to Stay and When to Go in La Union
Part of the La Union travel guide — see every topic in All La Union Guides.
Most visitors stay in San Juan, close to the surf and the cafes. Others choose quieter beaches in Bauang or the towns farther north. Rooms range from simple surf hostels with shared dorms to small boutique hotels and beach resorts with pools. Weather and weekends make a big difference here, so plan your dates with care.
San Juan
San Juan is the best base for surfing and food. The area around Urbiztondo beach has many hostels, guesthouses and small hotels, often only a short walk from the waves. Many places have a cafe or bar downstairs and a relaxed, social mood. Rooms that face the main road can be noisy, so ask for a room at the back or one closer to the beach. On weekends and holidays the best rooms fill up fast, so book early. During the week you can often find a room on arrival, but booking ahead is still safer.
Bauang and San Fernando
Bauang, south of San Fernando, has a long beach with several older resorts, larger rooms and pools. It is quieter than San Juan and suits families and people who do not surf. San Fernando, the city in the middle, has business hotels, malls, banks and hospitals. It is not on the beach, but it is practical for a short stop or if you need city services. Both are a short tricycle or jeepney ride from the surf strip in San Juan.
Weather and seasons
La Union has a clear dry season and a rainy season. The dry months, from about November to May, have the most sun. December to February are the coolest months and also have the most regular surf. March to May is hot, the sea is often calm, and it is a good time for swimming and day trips. The rainy season runs from about June to October. Heavy rain, typhoons and flooding can close roads and trails at this time. If you travel in these months, keep your plans flexible and follow local weather news.
Weekdays versus weekends
Because the drive from Manila is now shorter, La Union is a popular weekend trip. From Friday night to Sunday, the surf strip is busy, the waves are crowded and room prices are higher. Long weekends and holiday weeks are the busiest of all. If you can, visit from Monday to Thursday. The beach is calmer, the surf schools have more time and the cafes are quiet. Many digital workers stay for a week or more and enjoy the slower weekdays.
