Getting There and Planning in Hundred Islands

Part of the Hundred Islands travel guide — see every topic in All Hundred Islands Guides.

Hundred Islands is in Alaminos City, Pangasinan, north of Manila. The trip takes about five hours or more by road, so most people stay at least one night. This guide covers how to get there, where to stay and when to go.

By bus

Several bus companies run direct buses from Manila to Alaminos, from terminals in areas such as Cubao and Pasay. The trip usually takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and stops. Some buses run overnight, so you can arrive early in the morning and go straight to the islands. From the Alaminos bus terminal, take a tricycle to Lucap Wharf, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Book bus seats in advance on weekends and holidays. Bring a jacket, as buses can be cold.

By car

By car, the main route goes north from Manila on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and SCTEX to the Luisita exit in Tarlac, then west through Camiling to Alaminos. The trip usually takes about 5 hours. Toll fees apply on the expressways. Driving gives you more freedom to visit Bolinao and other nearby places. Parking is available near Lucap Wharf. Avoid leaving Manila on Friday evenings, when traffic is heavy. Download offline maps before you go. Fuel stations are common along the expressways.

Where to stay

Most visitors stay in Lucap, near the wharf, or in the centre of Alaminos. Lucap has guesthouses, small hotels and inns, some with views over the water toward the islands. Staying in Lucap means you can walk to the boats early in the morning. Alaminos town has more restaurants and shops. Bolinao, about an hour away, has beach resorts if you want to combine both places. Book ahead for weekends and holidays. Prices are lower on weekdays. Many places can also help you book a boat.

When to go

The best time to visit is the dry season, from about November to May. March to May is the hottest time, with calm seas and clear water, but also the most crowded, especially during the Easter holidays. From about June to October, typhoons and strong winds can stop boats from leaving. If a storm is coming, boat trips may be cancelled for safety. Check the weather and ask the tourism office at Lucap Wharf if boats are running. Have a spare day in case of bad weather.
