Bolinao Day Trip in Hundred Islands

Part of the Hundred Islands travel guide — see every topic in All Hundred Islands Guides.

Bolinao is a coastal town at the western tip of Pangasinan, about an hour by road from Alaminos. It has white-sand beaches, clear cave pools, waterfalls and a lighthouse on a hill. It is quieter than Hundred Islands and makes a good second day. This guide covers the main sights.

Patar Beach

Patar Beach is the best-known beach in Bolinao, with long stretches of fine, pale sand facing the open sea. Small resorts and simple cottages line parts of the shore. The beach is good for walking and watching the sunset. The sea can be rough, with strong waves at some times of year, so check conditions before swimming. On weekdays the beach is often quiet. Some areas charge a small entry or cottage fee. Bring water and snacks, as stores are few. Shade is limited at midday.

Cave pools

Bolinao has caves with clear, cool pools of water inside. The best known is the Enchanted Cave, where you climb down stairs into a cave and swim in a natural pool lit by lights. It is part of a small resort that charges an entry fee. The water is cool and very clear. Rocks can be slippery, so walk carefully. Other caves in the area can also be visited, sometimes with local guides. Go early to avoid crowds. Bring a towel and water shoes.

Bolinao Falls

Bolinao Falls are a group of waterfalls in the countryside inland from the town. The water falls into wide, green pools where visitors can swim. Rafts and floats are sometimes available. The falls are busiest on weekends. In the dry season the water flow can be low, and in the rainy season the water can be brown and strong. The road to the falls is rough in places, so a tricycle or private car is the best way to get there.

Cape Bolinao Lighthouse

Cape Bolinao Lighthouse stands on a hill near the coast. Its tower is about 30 metres tall, and the hill makes it one of the highest lights in the country. From the grounds, you get wide views over the sea and the coastline. It is a pleasant stop late in the day, when the light is soft and the air is cooler. The nearby coast also has rocky shores and small beaches. Check access hours, as the lighthouse grounds may have limited opening times. A tricycle from town is the easiest way to get there. Agree on the fare first.
