Legazpi City Base in Bicol Region
Part of the Bicol Region travel guide — see every topic in All Bicol Region Guides.
Legazpi is the capital of Albay province and the main gateway to the Bicol Region. It sits on the coast with Mayon Volcano rising behind it. The city has hotels in every price range, good food and easy transport to nearby sights. This guide explains how to get there, how to get around and what to see from your base.
Arriving in Bicol
Bicol International Airport is in Daraga, a short drive from Legazpi. It opened in 2021 and has flights from Manila, Cebu and some other cities. Long-distance buses also run from Manila to Legazpi and Naga, but the trip takes many hours. Naga City in Camarines Sur has its own airport and is the best base for Caramoan. If you want to see Mayon, Donsol and Caramoan in one trip, plan your route in a line rather than going back and forth.
Getting around
In Legazpi, tricycles and jeepneys are the common ways to get around. Taxis exist but may be fewer than in large cities. For day trips, many visitors hire a van or car with a driver. Vans run from the city terminals to towns such as Donsol and Daraga. Ask your hotel about current fares and routes. Traffic in the city is usually light outside of rush hour. Walking is easy along the bay front and in the city centre. Agree on the price before you ride.
Views and the bay front
Legazpi Boulevard runs along the bay and is popular for walking, cycling and watching the sunset. On clear mornings Mayon looks very close. Ligñon Hill, just outside the city centre, has paths, a viewing deck and a zipline, with wide views of the volcano, the city and the sea. There are small cafes and restaurants in and around the city, and malls with food courts. The Embarcadero area by the port is quieter than it once was, so check what is open. Evenings are cooler and good for a walk.
Easy day trips
From Legazpi you can visit Mayon viewpoints such as the Cagsawa Ruins and Sumlang Lake, or take an ATV ride on the lava trails. Donsol, for whale sharks and fireflies, is about one to two hours away. Beaches and islands are also within reach, such as those in the nearby areas of Albay and Sorsogon. Check the weather before every trip, and check the PHIVOLCS alert level for Mayon. The rainy season and typhoon months can affect boats and roads.
