Tappiya Falls in Banaue and Batad

Part of the Banaue and Batad travel guide — see every topic in All Banaue and Batad Guides.

Tappiya Falls is a tall waterfall in the valley below Batad village. The trail goes across the rice terraces and then down many steep steps to a large pool. Many visitors swim in the cold water before climbing back up. It is one of the best walks in the area and a good way to see the terraces up close. This guide covers the route, timing and how to prepare.

The trail

The trail starts in Batad village and crosses the terraces on narrow stone walls. After the terraces, it goes down a long section of steep, uneven steps to the bottom of the falls. The walk usually takes about 45 minutes to one hour each way from the village, but it can take longer if you are slow on steps. The climb back up is the hardest part, so save some energy. A local guide is recommended for first-time visitors. Some sections have no handrails, so move with care. Take short rests in the shade when you can.

At the falls

The waterfall drops into a wide pool surrounded by rocks. The spray is strong, and you may get wet even if you do not swim. Many people swim near the edges, where the water is calmer. The water is very cold. Do not swim directly under the falling water, and be careful on wet rocks. After heavy rain, the falls are more powerful, and swimming may not be safe. Ask your guide before going in. Keep your phone and bag on a dry rock away from the spray. Swim only if you feel confident in cold water.

When to go

Go in the morning, before the midday heat, and so you have plenty of time to get back to Batad in daylight. The dry season, from about February to May, gives firmer paths. During the rainy season, the steps become very slippery and the falls can be dangerous. Avoid the trail if a storm is coming. Even in good weather, allow about three hours for the whole trip, including time at the falls. If it starts to rain hard, turn back early. Tell your guesthouse where you are going before you leave.

What to bring

Wear shoes or sandals with good grip that can get wet. Bring swimwear, a small towel and a dry bag for your phone. Carry enough water for the climb back, as well as a snack. A hat and sun cream help on the open terraces. Some people use walking poles for the steep steps. There may be small shops near the falls or in the village selling drinks, but do not count on it. Pack light, as you will carry everything up the steps. A light rain jacket is useful in any season.
