Banaue Viewpoints in Banaue and Batad

Part of the Banaue and Batad travel guide — see every topic in All Banaue and Batad Guides.

Not every visitor has time or energy for the walk into Batad. Banaue town has its own viewpoints over the rice terraces, which are easy to reach by road. Other terrace villages nearby, such as Bangaan and Hungduan, offer quieter landscapes. This guide covers the easy options and how to see more of the area without long treks.

The main viewpoint

The main Banaue viewpoint is a short ride from the town centre, along the road north. From here you can see terraces climbing up the valley sides. There are souvenir stalls and simple places to buy drinks. The view is best in the morning, when the light is soft and clouds may still sit in the valley. It is an easy stop for people who cannot walk far. Expect other visitors at popular times. There may be a small fee to park or to use the viewing area. Clear mornings give the best views, so go early. Bring a light jacket, as mornings can be cool.

Walks near town

Short walks lead from Banaue town down into the terraces and to small nearby villages. Some guesthouses can arrange a guide for a half-day walk. These walks show daily life in the area, with farmers, gardens and small streams. The paths can be steep and muddy, so wear good shoes. Ask your guide which areas are open to visitors, and always walk on the edges of the terraces, never in the fields. Half-day walks are a good option if you have only one day. Bring water and a hat.

Bangaan and Hungduan

Bangaan is a small village with terraces around it, on the road toward Batad. It can be seen from a viewpoint on the road or visited with a short walk. Hungduan, further from Banaue, has wide terraces and is visited by fewer travellers. Both are part of the UNESCO-listed rice terrace clusters. Visiting these places takes more planning, so ask in Banaue about transport and guides. They are good choices if you want quieter views. Roads to these villages can be rough after rain. Bring cash, as there are few shops.

When the terraces look best

The terraces change through the year. After planting, the fields are full of water and young green rice. Before harvest, the rice turns golden. Planting and harvest times vary from village to village and year to year, so ask locally before you go. During the dry season, from about February to May, the weather is usually better for photos. In the rainy season, the terraces can look very green, but fog and rain may hide the views. Any season can be beautiful in its own way. Go with an open mind and enjoy the views you find.
