Iloilo River Esplanade in Bacolod and Iloilo

Part of the Bacolod and Iloilo travel guide — see every topic in All Bacolod and Iloilo Guides.

The Iloilo River Esplanade is a long public park along the Iloilo River. It has wide paths for walking, running and cycling, with trees, benches and views of the water. Mangroves grow along parts of the river bank. For many people, the Esplanade shows how Iloilo City has changed into a clean, green and walkable city.

A park along the river

The Esplanade was built in several stages, and it now runs for a few kilometres along both sides of the Iloilo River. The paths are wide and smooth, with lights at night. There are benches, shade trees, small gardens and places to sit by the water. Several bridges cross the river, so you can walk one side and come back on the other. Signs tell visitors about the river and its plants. The park is free, and it is open to everyone.

Mangroves and nature

The Iloilo River is a tidal river, which means its level rises and falls with the sea. Mangrove trees grow along parts of the bank. Mangroves protect the land from floods and storms, clean the water and give a home to fish, crabs and birds. Herons and egrets are often seen hunting in the shallows. Efforts to clean the river and protect the mangroves have been part of the Esplanade project. Please do not throw rubbish in the water or damage the plants.

When to go

The Esplanade is busiest in the early morning and evening, when the air is cooler. At sunrise, runners, walkers and cyclists use the paths. In the evening, families, couples and groups of friends come to walk, sit and enjoy the breeze. The park lights look pretty after dark. In the middle of the day the sun is strong and there is less shade on some parts. Bring water, and wear light clothes and a hat if you go in the daytime.

Cafes and nearby areas

Along and near the Esplanade there are cafes, restaurants and small food stalls, especially around the Diversion Road and Smallville area. Smallville is a busy evening area with bars and restaurants. Some parts of the river also have a boat ride that lets you see the city from the water; check locally if it is running. From the Esplanade it is easy to reach the old downtown area on Calle Real, which has restored early 20th-century buildings with shops below. A walk there makes a good pair with an evening by the river.
