Perfect 3 Day Itinerary in Penang

Part of the Penang travel guide — see every topic in All Penang Guides.

Penang is compact enough that three days covers it properly. The structure that works: one day walking George Town's heritage core, one day out to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si with the rural west if you have energy, and one day built entirely around food and whichever of the beaches, the national park or the museums appeals. The recurring constraint is heat: everything outdoors happens before ten or after four, and the middle of the day is for shophouse cafes and museums.

Day 1: George Town on foot

Start at seven with a kopitiam breakfast — charcoal kaya toast and soft eggs. Walk the heritage core while it is cool: Fort Cornwallis and the Esplanade, the Street of Harmony with its four religions in a few hundred metres, Khoo Kongsi, the Armenian Street murals and the iron sculptures. Late morning at Pinang Peranakan Mansion. Lunch at a hawker centre. Afternoon in the air conditioning — a museum, or shophouse cafes. Late afternoon at the clan jetties for the light. Evening on Love Lane or at a Nyonya restaurant.

Day 2: hill and temple

Early to Air Itam: breakfast at the market, where one of the island's most famous asam laksa stalls operates, then Kek Lok Si before the heat — the pagoda, the inclined lift and the Kuan Yin statue. Then the funicular up Penang Hill, where it is five degrees cooler, for the viewpoints and The Habitat's canopy walk. Come down in the late afternoon or stay for sunset and the city lights. If you have energy left, the Botanic Gardens are on the way back.

Day 3: choose your Penang

Three good options. Food: a deliberate crawl through New Lane, Kimberley Street, Chulia Street and a nasi kandar lunch, with a cooking class in the middle. Nature: Penang National Park from Teluk Bahang — walk to Kerachut for the turtle beach and meromictic lake, boat back — or the north coast's spice garden and beaches. Culture: Hin Bus Depot, the contemporary galleries and the remaining house museums, with Balik Pulau's rural west in the afternoon.

Variations

With a fourth day, Ipoh is two hours south by train and is a genuinely good food and architecture town. With five, add Langkawi by ferry or a short flight. If you are here for Chinese New Year, build the trip around Kek Lok Si's lantern illumination in the evening. If you are with children, swap day three for Entopia, Escape adventure park and the beach. And if you have only two days, do days one and two and eat your way through both evenings.
