Family Friendly Attractions in Penang

Penang works well with children, provided the heat is planned around. The island has an unusual concentration of purpose-built family attractions along the north coast road, several genuinely good indoor options in George Town for the middle of the day, and the funicular up Penang Hill, which is both an activity in itself and a way to spend an afternoon five degrees cooler than sea level. The beaches are calm and shallow, which helps.
The north coast cluster
Entopia at Teluk Bahang is a large butterfly and insect biodome with thousands of free-flying butterflies and a well-designed indoor discovery centre — genuinely good and largely shaded. Escape, nearby, is an outdoor adventure park with zip lines, obstacle courses and a water park, and holds a record for the world's longest tube water slide; it suits active children from about six upwards. The Tropical Spice Garden has a children's trail, and the Craft Batik factory lets children paint their own piece.
Penang Hill and the outdoors
The funicular is a hit with most children on its own, and the summit is cool enough to be comfortable in the middle of the day. The Habitat's canopy walkway and cantilevered viewing platform are well made and safe. At sea level, the Botanic Gardens have space to run and a resident macaque population, and Penang National Park's boat rides to Monkey Beach are easier with children than the jungle trek. The beaches at Batu Ferringhi are shallow and calm.
Indoors in George Town
The heritage core has accumulated a cluster of trick-art and interactive museums — upside-down houses, 3D art, the Camera Museum, the Toy Museum, a ghost museum — which are unashamedly commercial and reliably entertaining on a hot afternoon or in a downpour. Wonderfood Museum, with its giant food models, is a good introduction to the local dishes before eating them. Admission runs 20–50 ringgit each and several are within a few streets of one another.
Practicalities
George Town's five-foot ways are covered but uneven, with steps between shopfronts, so a carrier beats a stroller in the heritage core. Malls and the north coast attractions are stroller-friendly. Malaysia is very family-friendly socially and children are welcome in restaurants and hawker centres at any hour. Nappies, formula and baby food are widely available. Grab is the easiest way to move around; car seats are not standard, so request one or bring your own. Plan indoor time between eleven and four.
