Getting Around Transport Guide in Penang

Penang is easy and cheap to move around. George Town's historic core is compact enough to walk in twenty minutes end to end, a free shuttle bus loops through it, and the Rapid Penang bus network covers the whole island for a few ringgit. Grab works everywhere and costs very little. What does not exist is any rail system on the island, and traffic on the main roads at peak is genuinely bad for a place this size.
Buses
Rapid Penang runs the island network from the Komtar and Weld Quay terminals in George Town. Fares are 1.40–4 ringgit depending on distance and are paid in cash on board with exact change, or by contactless card. The useful routes: 101 along the north coast to Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang; 204 and others to Air Itam for Kek Lok Si and the funicular; 401 and 502 to Balik Pulau and the south. The free CAT shuttle loops the heritage core and is genuinely convenient in the heat.
Grab, trishaws and bicycles
Grab is the default for anything beyond walking distance: George Town to Batu Ferringhi is 30–50 ringgit, and short hops within town are 6–12. Metered taxis exist and frequently do not use the meter, so there is little reason to take one. Trishaws still work the heritage core and are a nice slow way to see it — agree the price first, typically 40–60 ringgit an hour. Bicycles rent for 10–20 ringgit a day and the flat, compact core suits them, though the traffic outside it does not.
The ferry and the bridges
The Penang ferry between George Town and Butterworth has run in some form since 1894 and remains the cheapest and most pleasant way across the channel, taking about fifteen minutes; the service was restructured in 2021 with new vessels. It connects directly to Butterworth's railway station for ETS trains south to Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. The two road bridges — 13.5 kilometres from 1985 and 24 kilometres from 2014 — carry the traffic and are tolled inbound to the island only.
Practical notes
Penang International Airport is at Bayan Lepas, about forty minutes south of George Town; Rapid Penang bus 401E runs there for a few ringgit and a Grab is 30–50. Scooters and cars rent widely but traffic in George Town is congested, one-way systems are confusing and parking is scarce — hire only if you intend to explore the island properly. Walking is genuinely the best option in the core, ideally before ten and after four, since the five-foot ways provide shade but not much relief from the humidity.
