Perfect 4 Day Itinerary in Mulu Caves

Mulu's activities are guided, timed and capped, so an itinerary here is really a booking sequence: reserve the flights, the accommodation and every activity together, months ahead, and the days arrange themselves around the tour times. Four nights is the right length for the caves and the canopy without the Pinnacles — three is the minimum and leaves no margin for the weather, which in a place with this much rain is a genuine risk.
Day 1: arrive and the bats
Fly in from Miri, thirty minutes, and walk from the airstrip to the park or the resort. Register, confirm your booked tours and pick up the park map. In the afternoon, the Deer Cave and Lang Cave tour: a three-kilometre boardwalk through swamp forest, Lang's formations, Deer Cave's vast passage and the guano mountain, and then the observatory below the cave mouth for the bat exodus. Walk back in the dark with a torch, which is part of the experience.
Day 2: the river caves
The morning tour by longboat up the Melinau river to Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave, usually with a stop at a Penan craft market on the way. Wind Cave's King's Room for the formations, then Clearwater's river passage and boardwalk, and a swim in the cold clear water at the cave mouth. Back for lunch. In the afternoon, the Paku waterfall trail or the botanical loop, and a guided night walk after dinner for stick insects, frogs, sleeping birds and civets.
Day 3: canopy and caving
The Mulu Canopy Skywalk in the early morning, when the birds and gibbons are active — 480 metres of walkway between fifteen trees, guided, in small groups. Then either a beginner adventure caving trip such as Racer or Lagang Cave, which involves scrambling and getting properly muddy and is the best value activity in the park, or the Garden of Eden walk through Deer Cave into the enclosed doline behind it. A second attempt at the bat exodus if the first was rained off.
Day 4: the spare day
Keep it. If the bats did not fly, or a river trip was cancelled, or a flight was delayed, this is what absorbs it. If everything went to plan, use it for a longer forest walk, a harder caving trip, or simply an unhurried morning before the flight out. And if the Pinnacles are the reason you came, add three days to this and slot the trek in the middle — boat and walk to Camp 5, the climb, and back.
