Mulu Caves
Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak is one of the most significant karst landscapes in the world and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2000 for both its geology and its biodiversity. Beneath its forested limestone mountains lies an immense cave system: Sarawak Chamber, the largest known cave chamber on earth by area, big enough to hold several jumbo jets; Deer Cave, with one of the largest cave passages anywhere and a colony of millions of bats that streams out at dusk in spiralling ribbons; and Clearwater Cave, among the longest cave systems in the world. Above ground, the Pinnacles — a forest of limestone blades up to forty-five metres tall on the flank of Gunung Api — are reached on a three-day trek. There is no road to Mulu; you fly in.
