Perfect 2 Day Itinerary in Malacca

Part of the Malacca travel guide — see every topic in All Malacca Guides.

Malacca is compact and best treated as a two-night stop rather than a base. Everything in the historic core is within a twenty-minute walk, and the sensible division is one day for the European layers — the Dutch square, St Paul's Hill, the Portuguese fort — and one for the Asian ones: Chinatown, the Peranakan houses, the Street of Harmony and the food. Arriving Thursday and leaving Saturday catches the Jonker night market without the worst of the weekend.

Day 1: the colonial core

Start at eight before the tour groups. The Dutch square, the Stadthuys history and ethnography museum, Christ Church. Climb St Paul's Hill for the roofless Portuguese church, the Dutch tombstones and the view over the strait, then down the far side to Porta de Santiago. The Sultanate Palace replica for the pre-colonial half of the story. Lunch at a chicken rice ball shop. Afternoon at the Maritime Museum in the replica carrack, or in the air conditioning. Evening: satay celup, then a river cruise after dark.

Day 2: Chinatown and the river

Cross the river into Chinatown early. The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum first — guided tours run at set times and it is the best thing in the city. Then the Street of Harmony: Cheng Hoon Teng, Kampung Kling Mosque and the Hindu temple. Jonker Street's antique shops before the crowds. Cendol at Jonker 88 for the queue and the palm sugar. Afternoon: walk the riverside promenade to Kampung Morten and the Villa Sentosa stilt house. Evening: the Jonker night market if it is Friday to Sunday, or the Portuguese Settlement if not.

If you have a third day

The Portuguese Settlement for a devil curry lunch and the small heritage centre. The Melaka Straits Mosque at sunset, which appears to float at high tide. The Taming Sari revolving tower for the overview. The fireflies at Kampung Kuala Linggi in the evening, forty-five minutes north-west, which is the best thing near Malacca and which almost nobody does. Or the coast at Klebang and Pengkalan Balak, which is where Malaysians go at the weekend.

Practical shape

Start at eight every day: the square is mobbed from ten and the heat is serious by then. Keep the middle of the day for museums, lunch and air conditioning. The core is entirely walkable so no transport is needed until you leave it. Book the Kuala Lumpur or Singapore bus in advance for a Sunday afternoon departure. And be realistic: Malacca is a small city and two full days covers it thoroughly, which is a compliment rather than a criticism.
