Best Time to Visit in Langkawi

Langkawi sits on Malaysia's west coast, sheltered from the north-east monsoon that closes the east-coast islands, so it has no closed season. What it has is a wetter half-year and a drier one. Roughly November to March is dry, calm and sunny, with the best sea conditions and the highest prices. Roughly April to October is wetter, with the heaviest rain typically from July to September, arriving as afternoon and evening squalls rather than continuous weather.
The dry season
November to March. Low rainfall, calm seas, reliable sunshine and the best visibility for Pulau Payar. Sea conditions make the island-hopping and marine-park trips consistently available. It is the peak season for hotel rates, and Chinese New Year, Christmas and New Year fill the island completely. January and February are the driest. Temperature is unchanged all year — highs of 31–33°C and lows of 24–25°C — but humidity is noticeably lower in these months, which makes walking and hiking substantially more pleasant.
The wet season
April to October, with the wettest stretch typically July to September. Rain arrives as heavy afternoon or evening squalls, often with dramatic thunderstorms over the Andaman, and mornings are frequently clear. The forest is greener, the waterfalls run properly, and hotel rates drop by thirty to fifty per cent. The costs: boat trips to Pulau Payar and the islands are cancelled more often, sea visibility drops, the cable car closes in wind and lightning, and the trails are muddy and leech-prone.
Haze and other variables
Transboundary haze from regional agricultural burning affects some years between roughly June and September, cutting visibility from the cable car and the SkyBridge to nothing and making the air unpleasant. It varies enormously year to year. Jellyfish appear seasonally on the beaches. Waterfall flow depends entirely on recent rain and can drop to a trickle late in the dry season, which catches out visitors who drive to Telaga Tujuh in February expecting a spectacle.
Choosing
For guaranteed weather and sea conditions: December to March, at peak prices. For the best balance: November, early December, and April to early June, when the weather is mostly good and rates have not peaked. For value: July to September, accepting cancelled boat trips and afternoon rain in exchange for a much cheaper and much quieter island. Avoid the days around Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, when Langkawi fills with domestic visitors and ferries and flights book out.
