Budget in Langkawi

Langkawi is inexpensive at the bottom and extremely expensive at the top, with less in between than you might expect. A backpacker can live on 120–180 ringgit a day; a comfortable trip with a mid-range hotel, a hire car and a couple of boat trips runs 400–700; and the north-west luxury resorts start at several thousand a night. The distinctive local factor is duty-free status, which makes alcohol roughly half the mainland price and is a genuine budget consideration.
Accommodation and food
A hostel bed is 40–90 ringgit, a guesthouse room 100–250, a mid-range hotel 250–600, and the well-known resorts 2,000–6,000. Food: a night-market plate 5–12, a warung meal 8–15, a Cenang strip restaurant main 25–60, and a seafood dinner for two by weight 80–200. Resort restaurants are two to four times strip prices. Eating at warungs and the rotating night markets, which is where the best local food is, costs 30–50 ringgit for a whole day.
Transport
Car hire is 80–150 ringgit a day, scooters 30–60, and fuel is cheap. There is effectively no public transport, so this is not optional. Taxis run on fixed-price coupons and Grab coverage is thin outside Cenang and Kuah. Flights from Kuala Lumpur are 100–400 ringgit return on the budget carriers if booked ahead, and considerably more over holidays. Ferries from the mainland are 20–40 ringgit and from Penang 60–70.
Activities
This is where the money goes. The cable car and SkyBridge together are around 60–100 ringgit for foreign visitors with the various add-ons. A Kilim mangrove boat is 250–450 per boat — share it. Island hopping is 40–80 per person shared. Pulau Payar is 250–400 including everything. A guided night walk is 150–250. Two or three of these fill a three-day trip and add several hundred ringgit per person, which is the single largest variable cost after accommodation.
The duty-free factor
Spirits at 50–90 ringgit a bottle against 130–200 on the mainland, beer at roughly half mainland prices, chocolate by the sackful and cheap cookware. If you drink, this materially changes an evening's cost — a bottle from a shop and a balcony beats a beach bar by a wide margin. Note the customs allowances for taking goods off the island, which are enforced at the airport and ferry terminals, and the strict baggage limits on the budget airlines if you plan to carry bottles home.
