Sabah covers about 74,000 square kilometres and the road network is limited, winding and slow. Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan is six to eight hours by road; to Semporna, nine to ten. That changes trip planning fundamentally: internal flights are frequently the sensible option, hiring a car with a driver is common, and a Sabah itinerary is built around two or three bases rather than day trips from one. The scenery on the road, particularly the Kinabalu range, partly compensates.
Flights
Kota Kinabalu's airport is the hub, with direct services from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and several regional cities. Within Sabah, short flights connect KK to Sandakan (45 minutes), Tawau (50 minutes) and Lahad Datu, and are inexpensive if booked ahead. For a trip combining Kinabalu, the Kinabatangan and Sipadan, flying between regions saves a full day each way against driving. MASwings operates several of the smaller routes. Baggage allowances are strict and matter if you are carrying dive gear.
Roads and buses
Express buses and shared minivans run the main routes from KK's Inanam and Padang Merdeka terminals: Sandakan six to eight hours, Semporna nine to ten, Tawau eight to nine, Kundasang and Ranau for Mount Kinabalu two to three. Fares are 25–80 ringgit. Roads are paved on the main routes and winding through the mountains; landslips after heavy rain are common and can add hours. Minivans leave when full rather than to a timetable. Night buses run the long routes.
Cars and drivers
Car hire is available in KK at 120–250 ringgit a day and driving is straightforward on the main roads, though four-wheel drive is needed for some lodge access roads and rural tracks. Hiring a car with a driver, at 400–700 ringgit a day, is common and often better value once you account for the distances and the state of some roads. Grab operates in Kota Kinabalu and patchily in Sandakan and Tawau, and not at all in rural areas.
Planning around distance
The practical shape of a Sabah trip is two or three bases with flights or long drives between them: Kota Kinabalu and Kinabalu Park in the west, Sandakan and the Kinabatangan in the east, and Semporna for diving in the south-east. Ten days covers two of those comfortably and three at a push. Lodge transfers are usually arranged by the lodge and included in the package, which removes most of the difficulty. Build in buffer time before flights: road journeys here are unpredictable.
