Perfect 3 Day Itinerary in Yogyakarta
Part of the Yogyakarta travel guide — see every topic in All Yogyakarta Guides.
Three days is the standard Yogyakarta stay and it works, because the four headline experiences — Borobudur, Prambanan, Merapi and the city itself — sit in different directions and none takes a full day. The constraint is not distance but light: Borobudur's mist and Merapi's summit are both dawn propositions, and Prambanan is best in the last two hours before closing. Build the days around that and everything fits. This assumes a car with driver on two of the three days.
Day 1: the city
Start at the Kraton when it opens, catching whichever court performance is scheduled that morning, then walk ten minutes to Taman Sari — the bathing pools first, then a guide to the underground mosque at Sumur Gumuling. Lunch in the Taman Sari kampung. Afternoon: Pasar Beringharjo for batik, then walk north up Malioboro to the Tugu monument. Evening: the two-hour wayang kulit at Sonobudoyo, then an angkringan cart behind the station for nasi kucing and kopi joss. That is the whole city, done on foot.
Day 2: Borobudur and the hills
Leave at four for sunrise at Punthuk Setumbu, then Borobudur at opening with a pre-booked climb slot. Add Mendut on the way back for the enormous seated Buddha. Lunch in the valley. Afternoon options depending on energy: the Menoreh hills for Suroloyo and a coffee farm, or Selogriyo temple through the rice terraces, or straight back for a nap and a massage. Evening in Prawirotaman for dinner and a drink. It is a long day and the four a.m. start is the price of the mist.
Day 3: Merapi and Prambanan
Dawn jeep tour on Merapi's southern flank — the debris field, the preserved house, the bunker — then the Ullen Sentalu museum in Kaliurang on the way down, which takes about ninety minutes on a guided route. Back to the city for a late lunch. Mid-afternoon, drive east to Prambanan and arrive around three: the main compound, then Candi Sewu, then Ratu Boko for sunset. In the dry season, stay for the Ramayana ballet on the open-air stage. Dinner near Prambanan or back in the city.
Variations
With a fourth day, add Gunungkidul: Goa Jomblang's abseil in the late morning and the south-coast beaches in the afternoon. With a fifth, take the train to Solo, an hour east, for the other Javanese court city and its own batik tradition. If temples are not your interest, swap day two for Gunungkidul and day three's afternoon for the Yogyakarta art circuit — Cemeti, Affandi, Jogja National Museum. And if you are arriving by train and leaving by air, remember the airport is now 45 kilometres and an hour away.
