Budget in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is remarkably cheap even by Indonesian standards, because it is a student city with a large domestic tourism market rather than an international resort one. Accommodation, food and transport are all a fraction of Bali's. The single significant cost is temple admission: Borobudur and Prambanan both charge foreign visitors many times the domestic rate, and between them they can easily exceed a day's accommodation. Budget for those separately and the rest of the trip is almost free by comparison.
Daily costs
A hostel dorm is 70,000–150,000 rupiah; a clean guesthouse room with air conditioning 200,000–400,000; a good boutique hotel 500,000–900,000. Street food is 10,000–20,000 a plate, a warung meal 20,000–35,000, and a restaurant main in Prawirotaman 50,000–100,000. A Gojek motorbike across town is 10,000–20,000. A backpacker can live well on 250,000–350,000 rupiah a day; a comfortable trip with a private room, restaurant meals and a driver for two of the days runs 700,000–1,200,000.
The temple tickets
This is where the money goes. Borobudur and Prambanan both operate two-tier pricing, and the foreign-visitor rate is substantially higher than the Indonesian one; Borobudur's upper-terrace climb is a separate, capped, additional ticket on top of grounds admission. Combined tickets exist — Borobudur plus Prambanan, or Prambanan plus Ratu Boko — and save meaningfully if you are visiting both. Check the current official prices before you go, because they have been revised more than once since the access system changed in 2023, and buy online to secure a climb slot.
Transport
The airport rail link from YIA to Tugu is 20,000–50,000 rupiah against 250,000–400,000 for a taxi, and takes about the same time — this is the single easiest saving available. Trans Jogja buses are around 4,000 rupiah flat. A scooter is 60,000–100,000 a day. A car with driver for a full day of temples is 500,000–700,000, which split between three or four people is cheaper than individual transport and much better. Intercity trains are excellent value: Jakarta to Yogyakarta in executive class is 400,000–700,000 rupiah.
Saving without trying
Eat at angkringan carts and warungs, which is what everyone here does and where the food is best anyway. Use Gojek rather than becak for actual transport, and becak only when you want the ride. Take the airport train. Visit the free things — Kotagede, the Code river murals, the Kraton's morning performances, the art spaces, Candi Sewu on the Prambanan ticket. Go midweek to the big sites, which costs nothing and improves the experience. And note the 2024 tourist levy applies on arrival in Bali, not in Java, so a Yogyakarta-only trip avoids it.
